Drive on Highway 1, the Panamerican Hwy tward the coty of Cartago, the nation’s first capital. From therecthe drive will take you through fertile agricultural farms on your wat to the top of the Irazu volcano at an elevation of 11,260 feet. Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica and is considered active.
At the summit, you will view the massive crater right from its arid edge and on a clean day, it is possible to see both the Atlantic and the Pacific Coast.
Descend back to Cartago for a stop at the country’s main religious site, the Basilica if our Lady of the Angels, a popular pilgrimage for many believers most visited on August 2nd. Afterward, visit the Lankester Botanical Gardens, a research center to protect, host and study more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads and many more tropical plants. Then head to the breathtaking Orosi Valley to see one off the oldest colonial churches and lunch at a local restaurant.
