The Highlights of Nicaragua

Day #1:

  • INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – MANAGUA
  • Arrival at Nicaragua International Airport. Meet & Greet followed by a guided transfer to Managua hotel.
  • Overnight at Real Intercontinental Hotel, Managua

Day #2:

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Before  heading to Selva Negra, you will tour Managua city which includes visits to Acahualinca Indian tracks, Ruben Dario Theater, Peace Park and other interesting places that are part of the latest history of Nicaragua.  Enjoy a typical lunch at local restaurant, and then continues to Matagalpa area.
  • Overnight at Selva Negra, Matagalpa

Day #3:

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • 08:00 Hrs. Morning Coffee Tour at Selva Negra
  • Then we head to Matagalpa, the more elegant and historical region.  There we will visit the cathedral, the museum of Carlos Fonseca, and the Coffee museum.  We will see how black ceramic is made in the old traditional style. You’ll also visit El Castillo del Cacao, where some of the best chocolate in Nicaragua is made using organic cocoa from small Matagalpa growers.  Here you’ll see the semi-artisanal process of creating delicious chocolate.  The view alone is well worth the trip as you see the city and its surrounding mountains.

Day #4:

Breakfast. Your day will be full of different experiences of Nicaraguan History. First a visit to the Chorotega Museum where you will see more than 1000 pieces of Pre Columbian Indigenous art that varies from 500BC to 500 AC. Continue your day to the colonial city of Leon for city tour.

Leon was founded by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in the year 1524 next to Lake Xolotlan and the active Momotombo volcano. The city was actually built next to the town known as Imabite.  In the year 1610 it was moved to its current location after being destroyed by a series of eruptions from the Momotombo volcano.  The city was basically buried, giving it the name of the Central American Pompeii.

Day #5:

After Breakfast depart to the Ruins of Old Leon – Declared in 2000 a UNESCO World

Heritage Site.  Continue your trip to the colonial city of Granada. The rest of the day at leisure.

Day #6:

Breakfast. You will see the Spanish influence at the colonial city of Granada. Your Nicaraguan expert will lead your day starting at Granada followed by a boat trip to Lake Nicaragua… the Largest freshwater lake in Latin America.  Continue to Masaya Volcano National Park along with a visit to the Masaya Market where you will find unique pieces of art by local artists.

Day #7:

Breakfast. Half day tour to Mombacho Volcano natural reserve.

Once at the reserve we will switch to a four wheel drive vehicle. The adventure begins on a paved road and right from the start we will be surprised by the biodiversity of this natural reserve. When we reach the summit, we will understand why this ecosystem is a cloud forest. The park keeper will give instructions to everyone so we can enjoy our visit. We will then take the trails of the volcano  (approximately 1:45 Minutes) to learn about the flora, the fauna and the ancient people who lived there and the Vulcan logy of the area. If the day is clear enough, we will visit an impressive viewpoint to observe the plain pacific region of Nicaragua, the neighboring city of Granada and the great lake of Nicaragua and its islands. When we return from our walk, we will visit the biological station where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or purchase snacks. Our guide will let us know when it is time to board the vehicle that will transport us back to the foot of the mountain. Considered a moderate hike.

Day #8:

Private Guided transfer from Granada city to International Airport at Managua.
